TWO Praises Pope Francis for Remarks in Support of Civil Unions for Same-Sex Couples

TWO Calls for Catholic “Ex-Gay” Guilt and Shame Group to Shut Down in Light of Pope’s Views

PHILADELPHIA – Truth Wins Out (TWO) praised Pope Francis today for comments in support of same-sex unions made in a new documentary released today in Rome. According to The New York Times: Speaking about pastoral outreach and care for people who identified as L.G.B.T., Francis directly addresses the issue of civil unions in the film.

“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” Francis said amid remarks in which he otherwise reiterated his support for gay people as children of God. “I stood up for that.”

The New York Times writes, Evgeny Afineevsky, the director of the documentary, ‘‘Francesco,’’ said that Francis made the remarks directly to him for the film. While Truth Wins Out supports full-fledged same-sex marriage and realizes this is not a change in church doctrine, the Pope’s comments are a breath of fresh air and will help LGBTQ Catholics who feel tormented and abused by the Roman Catholic Church.

“We applaud Pope Francis for his wise and compassionate support for legalizing same-sex relationships,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “We call on the destructive ‘ex-gay’ Catholic organization Courage International to immediately shut down in light of these comments. Unless, of course, they think they are more Catholic than the Pope.”

Courage International is a deeply destructive group that ruins lives by using guilt and shame to force LGBTQ people into renouncing love and sexual relationships. The rogue organization says its goal for members is “to live chaste lives in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality.” The anti-LGBTQ group farcically tries to replace romantic relationships with “chaste friendships” and says that they “are not only possible but necessary in a chaste Christian life; and to encourage one another in forming and sustaining these friendships.”

“Courage International should take a clue from the Pope and stop shaming LGBTQ Catholics into surrendering their joy, love and humanity,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “The misery caused by Courage International is disgraceful and the organization no longer has a reason to exist.”
