Historic Speech Elevates the Ongoing Struggle for LGBT Equality
BURLINGTON, VT. – Truth Wins Out praised President Barack Obama’s uplifting and inclusive inauguration speech today, which paid homage to the important gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender struggle for equality.
“We are ecstatic with the president’s speech, because it highlights his commitment to our movement’s fight for fairness and it’s historic role in America’s quest for expanding equal rights for all people,” said Wayne Besen, Executive Director for Truth Wins Out. “This uplifting speech shows precisely why our community played a significant role in the President’s reelection efforts.”
In front of a packed crowd on the National Mall, the president said:
“We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths – that all of us are created equal – is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall…Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.”
