Fighting the ‘Ex-Gay’ Myth In Asheville, NC (June 8-10)

This week, TWO will stop in Asheville, NC (June 8-10) where we will counter Exodus International’s “The Reality of Grace” ex-gay extravaganza.

Wednesday, June 8th: Opening Night Gala. Film
(Changing our Minds: the Evelyn Hooker Story) with commentary by therapist Clay Middleton.

Thursday, June 9th, 7PM: TWO’s Wayne Besen will give a presentation on the “exgay” industry and host a panel with people who will relate their experiences inside Exodus International and related “exgay” ministries.

Friday, June 10th: Author/activist Mel White will host a panel of local affirming clergy for a discussion of attitudes toward the LGBT community within organised religion.

Our counter conference will take place at Tressa’s, 28 Broadway, in Asheville. All programs will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Wayne Besen is the Founding Executive Director of Truth Wins Out and author of “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth” (Haworth, 2003). In 2010, Besen was awarded the “Visionary Award” at the Out Music Awards for organizing the American Prayer Hour, an event which shined a spotlight on the role American evangelicals played in the introduction of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.
