Porno Pete: Unintentionally helping people EVOLVE on LGBT issues since the beginning of his career.
The hate group leader best known as Porno Pete has been chasing a self-created dust devil the last few days, involving the anti-gay Catholic group Legatus. The group was planning to host actor Gary Sinise, beer family heir Pete Coors and Fox News host Bret Baier as speakers, but all three have pulled out, having been alerted to the extremist views of Legatus through buzz created by one of Jeremy Hooper’s posts. This made tortured gay erotic fiction writer Robert Oscar Lopez refer to Jeremy as a “catty gossip-hound.” He also complained that “Baier and Sinise pull[ed] up stakes and [ran] for the hills…because of Jeremy Hooper, a little nobody with a really lame blog.” Oh, Lopez is so hurt.
The funny part is that Jeremy really didn’t do anything besides write the post. He didn’t call for anything to be cancelled. He didn’t contact anyone. He didn’t pressure his readers into action. He simply reported. You can read the link for yourself. If you find Jeremy’s piece to be a grotesque attack or smear campaign, you, too, might be tortured and paranoid like Robert Oscar Lopez.
But on to the meat of the post, because Lopez isn’t important. (Neither is Porno Pete, but Pete’s more entertaining.) The other day, Pete posted a serving of word salad complaining that Baier, Coors and Sinise had pulled out of the Legatus event, and linked it to his belief that Fox News, at heart, doesn’t really doesn’t care about the needs or feelings of anti-gay wingnuts like Pete. On this, I believe he is correct. Fox caters to the pursuit of money, focusing on continually ginning up the Republican Outrage Machine. This is why they are still yelling about Benghazi, why they ran their mouths about the Fast and Furious faux scandal for months, why Seth Rogen is their current Public Enemy No. 1 for pointing out something completely obvious and “bland in the extreme” about “American Sniper,” and why they spent an entire week claiming that much of Paris and the city of Birmingham in the UK are comprised of “no-go” zones for non-Muslims. Europe had a good laugh at that one, but Fox repeated it for a week because their viewers can’t pick out Europe on a map and they are scared of Muslims.
The sad fact for Porno Pete and those like him is that, even among that demographic, Fox has determined (correctly) that anti-gay hate just doesn’t bring home the bacon like it used to. One of Pete’s supporters e-mailed Bret Baier, asking if he pulled out at Fox News’s behest. Here is that letter, and the source of the headline:

If you feel the homosexual lifestyle is something to be respected you need to read your Bible and devolve to Christian and Catholic values. Please, Fox, won’t you DEVOLVE? While Pete’s small and shrinking cohort of true believers is in no way representative of the mainstream of “Christian and Catholic values,” and while the biblical case against homosexuality is only there if you really, really hate gays enough to ignore all the scholarship that says it isn’t, I find it hilariously appropriate that the letter writer is so unable to make English words that he/she inadvertently ended up typing the truth. Typical Americans For Truth supporter, I’d imagine.
And here is Bret Baier’s response, in which he explains that yes, Fox wasn’t that into the idea, but really, neither was he, once he found out how nasty Legatus is:

I pulled out of the speech at Fox’s request — because of the controversy surrounding some of these articles and editorials that have been published in the Legatus magazine.
Including this one about homosexuality –described as Same Sex Attraction Disorder – SSA:
“There are many reasons why people suffer from SSA disorder. Some “discover” this tendency within them. Others grow into it through pursuits of pleasure or experimentation. Some use it to punish themselves or others. Whether the disorder has some deep, unknown roots over which one has virtually no control, or whether it’s a developed disorder resulting from bad choices, it leaves an individual disposed toward activities and a lifestyle that are dangerous — physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Fortunately there is hope for those who suffer from the disorder. The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality reports that significant numbers of homosexual persons have undergone treatment and had their sexual drives properly ordered. These findings are a beacon of hope to those suffering from SSA, as well as for their family and friends who desire their happiness and good health. Finally, for those who for whatever reason cannot be cured, there is a support group known as Courage to help them live safe, moral, chaste lives. Those who continue to suffer from this disorder can find true help through an orientation toward their Savior and Redeemer, “the Orient from on High,” and the life that He offers them in Himself.

I am a lifelong mass attending Catholic – I’m a lector at my parish. I consider myself to be in line with my Church on most things. This isn’t about me.. but, describing homosexuality as a ‘disorder’ and talking about ways to ‘cure’ people from it – does not seem to line up with the loving, accepting Church that I know. Nor does it match up with how Pope Francis has talked about the issue recently.
I couldn’t speak because of that – I don’t wish the group any harm, but after Gary Sinise pulled out.. as a newsman, Fox agreed that I could not be surrounded by that controversy… as much as I would have loved to have talked about my book, my faith, and my son’s battle with congenital heart disease.
That is the truth.
