According to reports (we are aware that this is April Fools Day, but if it’s a joke, it’s not a very funny one), James Franco is in talks to star as Michael Glatze, the former gay activist who renounced his role in the movement, married a woman, started aligning himself with the most extreme fringes of the right like Porno Pete, and recently issued an apology to the readers of Truth Wins Out for his extreme, divisive rhetoric. The role wouldn’t be out of character for Franco. From Page Six:

James Franco, currently starring in Broadway’s “Of Mice and Men,” is set to star in an upcoming movie about Michael Glatze, a gay activist who renounced his homosexuality after turning to religion following a health scare.

The $3.5 million film is being produced by Gus Van Sant and is set to start shooting in New York in July.

Franco has played several gay men, including a role opposite Sean Penn in Van Sant’s “Milk” and Allen Ginsberg in “Howl.”

As Andy Towle said in his post on the topic (though he says his April Fools’ antennae are also up), “we’d watch it.”
