To make a long story short, Michael Glatze was a gay activist who discovered a disturbing version Jesus during a hospital stay. After his conversion, Glatze began writing some virulently anti-gay articles for a racist right wing glatzecyber rag called World Net Daily.  Here is a typical rant from a May 30, 2013 column,  “Homosexuality – the Way God Sees It”:

“To be strong, as men, Christian men must understand that homosexuality is a direct raping of the relationship between Man and God – NOT, as some have suggested, a perfectly viable sexual ‘choice’ open to the same freedoms that any other ‘consensual choice’ seems to have in our relativistic society. Sure, Christian truth may not become the law of our land any time soon (though it certainly could), but Christian truth can certainly become the law of our lives – and it should, if we hope to make an impact on our world! God gifted me with a personal walk through homosexuality to the other side. Now, today, I’m happy and living a good, God-honoring life.”

His columns are an affront to the LGBT community and simply mean. Obviously, such false and inflammatory rhetoric angered many people and made Glatze look like a wing nut. Thus, he should not have been shocked when people were less than enthusiastic about his recent marriage to Rebekah. (I’m sure she is lovely and so far hasn’t said one offensive word, so we will leave her out of this.)

Now, it seems, Glatze has had a change of heart and feels remorse about his dubious actions and nasty words. He issued an apology today to the readers of Truth Wins Out:

Dear Truth Wins Out Readers:

I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to you for wisdom and compassion. My interest is not to sit here and lecture you – God knows you’ve heard enough of that. My interest is to ask that you exercise wisdom and compassion with respect to my life and I promise to do the same with you all.

I want to say, here and now, that evangelical Christianity here in America (especially) is failing to reach souls with the love of Jesus Christ. There is far too much commercialism, fear, hatred, and dogmatism… AND, I HAVE BEEN PART OF THAT TOO MUCH! And, for that, I apologize.

I want to say that I am sorry for the way that Jesus has been represented through some of my actions in recent years, as “a hateful bigot who hates gays.” That is not the heart of the Lord Jesus Christ.

On my own personal journey, I have found that there are many approaches to Christianity. If you are a Christian, I would ask that you would commit to praying that I would find the true Christ amidst the many denominational approaches to Christianity.

And, at the same time, I would ask that you grant me the kind of grace that He offered this world. I do not have all the answers. But, I am – earnestly – seeking the truth. I want to thank you for your forgiveness and I want to say that I am personally sorry for the pain that any of my words, or actions, may have caused any of you.

Thank you, and God bless you.

At Truth Wins Out we thank Michael for his apology and we are going to give him the benefit of the doubt — this one time. After all, maybe he got caught up in the zeal of an exciting, new conversion and went overboard. It can happen to the best of us. Michael, if you are sincere and stop your gay bashing, you might be pleasantly surprised to find out how few people care about your personal life. If you are truly into women now, great! Go for it! Enjoy your life! No one gives a damn. However, there is no excuse for trashing the LGBT community and saying mean things that are not true — which only feeds into hatred and encourages bullies.

My final words of advice?

Michael, your portrayal of your time in the LGBT community seems grossly distorted. If it was so damn awful and unpleasant, you would not have been out of the closet and worked for gay rights for so long. You were a gay activist because you recognized the daily humiliation and injustice faced by LGBT people — and you had the good sense to do something about it. Along this journey, you surely must have had some profound friendships, romantic interests, and met some terrific people that likely meant quite a bit to you. Do you really want to waste your life vindictively hurting these individuals to prove your heterosexuality? Given your prior work and passion, I think you are bigger and better than that. I hope your apology is from the heart and that you learned a critically important lesson: You don’t have to be a homophobic asshole to be a good Christian.

As long as you are a decent and kind human being we wish you luck and happiness. But, please, don’t disappoint us and let us down, because there is nothing worse than an insincere, two-faced hypocrite.
