Fifty years ago, these sorts of silly arguments worked, simply because people weren’t exactly well informed about sexual orientation in those days. Now it’s hard to imagine who Dave Daubenmire thinks he’s persuading with messages like these:
On Friday’s “News With Views” broadcast, “Coach” Dave Daubenmire told his viewers that, just as he has been warning for a dozen years, the legalization of gay marriage is now leading to the legalization of pedophilia.
“Hey folks, hear me now: the pedophiles are coming,” Daubenmire asserted, pointing to the bogus claims made by the American Family Association as evidence.
“We tried to warn you, that’s exactly where this slippery slope would take us,” he said. “Once, in 2001, when we declared that a man had a right to legal homosexual sodomy with another man, we opened that Pandora’s Box … Now friends, I’ve got to ask you something: where are we going to draw the line? I remember when I used to go out and used to tell people this is what’s coming, here’s what’s coming and they would laugh and so ‘oh, that’s never going to happen.’ I would say ‘oh, yes it is if we allow other debaucherous, immoral, unnatural behaviors to be legalized, how do you say no?’ If you say that a man has a right to violate God’s laws and marry a man, how can you say that a man doesn’t have the right to violate God’s law and have sex with a younger man, a prepubescent man?”
People are still laughing at you, Dave. And for the millionth time, how do we know that this argument is insane? Because it doesn’t factor in consent, which is the starting point for all discussions of the legality of sex. But again, normal people know that.
