Former NFL football star Dexter Manley flushed his media career down the toilet today, when he called former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman 
a “queer” during an appearance on WTOP in Washington. According to the Washington Post:
This happened during a live appearance around 9:40 a.m., an appearance that had previously been filled with jokes and laughs. Manley — a regular guest on the station — had talked about how the Broncos result made him kick his dogs, and how Peyton Manning makes defenders pee in their pants. He also forgot Kyle Shanahan’s first name; “see, I had this brain surgery, so you’ve got to forgive me,” Manley apologized.
The hosts attempted to end the spot with another light-hearted moment.
“Was it a big jinx that Troy Aikman was doing the game, the former Cowboy?” Manley was asked at the end of the segment.
“I think Troy was a queer,” Manley said.
The hosts immediately made it clear that this wasn’t a topic for humor, and encouraged Manley to step back.
“I’m sorry about that,” he said. “I take that back….I apologize.”
WTOP reacted swiftly to Manley’s remarks. The news director, Jim Farley said that he was “shocked and stunned” and that the ex-jock “will not be on the station again.”
How obtuse does one have to be in 2013 to say homophobic comments on the air? Had he not learned anything over recent flareups on this issue? Or, perhaps, he doesn’t watch the news or even read the sports section. In any case, a person who is this unaware doesn’t have the common sense to be broadcasting. I’m always disappointed when a player I once rooted for turns out to be a Grade A douche bag.
Is the “Martyr Industrial Complex” the next stop for Manley? Will he go down the street and shill for the Family Research Council, whining to Americans about what a giant victim he is?
