Chris Christie debated Democratic opponent Barbara Buono last night, and the subject of marriage equality came up. Buono has a lesbian daughter and supports equality; Christie, on the other hand, said this:
Christie said he would “grab them and hug them and tell them I love them,” but they would know that “Dad believes that marriage is between one man and one woman,” Politico reports:
“My children understand that there are going to be differences of opinion in our house and in houses all across this state and across this country,” Christie said. He said he would respect voters if they approved gay marriage, but said the decision does not belong to the courts or the legislature.
That’s not a “difference of opinion,” Governor Christie. You either support your children’s rights to find lifelong love and commitment or you don’t. If you do not, the “grab them and hug them and tell them I love them” thing is unimportant, because you’re saying that, in one way, you love them less than your straight children.
Get on the right side of history, Governor, as your equivocations on this are very 1995 and your constituents already support marriage equality by super majorities.
