wmThe fact that Wentworth Miller, star of TV’s Prison Break, is gay has long been an open secret, but he has chosen this moment, as Russia is targeting her own LGBT citizens with discrimination and violence, to officially come outvia a letter sent to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival:

Actor Wentworth Miller, of Prison Break, came out as “a gay man” in a letter sent Wednesday to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, declining his participation because, he writes, “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”

He went on:

“The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.”

This is a particularly apt time for celebrities to come out. The West has made great strides and, in the United States, anti-gay bigots are a shrinking minority. However, anti-gay campaigns are stepping up in Russia and around other less developed parts of the world, and the American Religious Right is more than happy to assist in their pogroms as the opportunities arise.

Well done, Wentworth.
