niemoller-quoteYou may be aware that the United Kingdom is very, very close to becoming a marriage equality nation. And of course, just as in the United States, they have their detractors, and some of them are melodramatic and weird. For instance, here is the Anglican Mainstream, which describes itself as an “information resource for Orthodox Anglicans,” bizarrely quoting the famous Martin Niemöller poem:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

Because equality for gay people is tantamount to Nazis carrying people off to concentration camps. Right. How offensive, on so many levels.

But congratulations, British wingnuts. You have learned much from your teachers from the American Fundamentalist Victim Machine. It’s all about you. It’s always all about you.
