Rachel Maddow was on Meet The Press* yesterday discussing last week’s Supreme Court rulings on DOMA and Prop 8. South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint and Ralph Reed attempted to defend their irrational bigotry, but Rachel wasn’t having it. Money quote:
“Gay people exist. There’s nothing we can do in public policy that makes more of us exist, or less of us exist. And you guys have been arguing for a generation that public policy ought to essentially demean gay people as a way of expressing disapproval of the fact that we exist, but you don’t make any less of us exist. You just are arguing in favor of more discrimination, and more discrimination doesn’t make straight people’s lives any better.”
She really cut to the chase there, didn’t she? At the heart of much of the misguided conservative opposition to equality is that they actually believe their own crap about homosexuality being a choice, that gays can be “recruited,” and whatnot. The fact, of course, is that nothing they do changes whether or not we exist, in larger or fewer numbers. Sure, if they make our lives more difficult, then more people stay in the closet and live miserable lives in miserable fake marriages. Granted. And if that’s the Religious Right’s goal, to make more people’s lives miserable, well, then, they’ve done a great job! They’ll be forever considered a stain on our history, of course.
