In case you’ve been celebrating the past couple of days and haven’t had a chance to truly wrap your head around what happened at the Supreme Court the other day — the details, exactly what will change for married gay couples around the nation and where we go from here — you should watch Rachel Maddow’s excellent primer from the night of the rulings. One of the most important takeaways is that because of the strength of the DOMA ruling, when gay couples who live in non-marriage equality states start suing for their marriages to be recognized — as in Rachel’s example, if a gay couple in New York gets transferred to Utah — those state marriage bans are likely to start dropping like flies. Both Justice Kennedy in the Court’s majority opinion and Justice Scalia, in his blistering pout-fest of a dissent, allude to the fact that the floodgates are now open.
In other words, Alabama — it’s coming to your state too.
