A right wing author known for books apologizing for the pro-Hitler regime in Vichy and extremist tracts promoting racist ideology committed suicide today at Notre Dame FranceCathedral in France to protest a new law allowing for marriage equality.

According to The Independent, Dominique Venner, 78, a former member of the nationalist terrorist movement, OAS, put a gun in his mouth and shot himself dead in front of scores of tourists inside the most visited building in France. (I’m sure he selflessly thought of the horrific trauma he would inflict on Catholic children as he pulled the trigger)

Earlier in the day, the author and historian wrote a bizarre manifesto on his website calling for “new, spectacular and symbolic actions to shake us out of our sleep, to jolt anesthetized minds and to reawaken memory of our origins.” Not only was it a tirade against gay marriage, but he warned that the “population of France and Europe” was going to be “replaced” and brought under “Islamist control” and “sharia law.”

Obviously, this was a very unstable individual. However, it can also be said that homophobia is a mental illness and many of those who violently opposed marriages that would have no affect on their lives were, to some degree, suffering from diseased minds. We hope this is a one-time event — but due to the paranoia and incitement of our foes, there will likely be more events carried out by radical extremists.
