Leading Republicans gave up a chance to walk the red carpet, lest Tea Baggers attack them in Red States.

The GOP’s hatred for President Obama is sulfuric beyond reason and borderline insanity. They are so terrified that Tea Baggers will use an embrace with Obama USA GOLDEN GLOBESin political ads, they can’t be seen publicly socializing with him, even though he is the President. How is this churlish dynamic good for America? (and we wonder why Congress is less popular in polls than bed bugs and crab lice)

The extent of the GOP leadership’s irrational disdain was evident when the President recently invited House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and three other key Republicans to an opening of the movie Lincoln — and they all declined. According to the New York Times:

The five Republicans invitees, including Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell, sent regrets; aides cited the lateness of the invitation and the leaders’ commitments on Capitol Hill.  Four of the five Democrats who were invited, including both party leaders — Senator Harry Reid of Nevada and Representative Nancy Pelosi of California — did make it, joining not only Mr. Obama but the film’s director, Steven Spielberg; its screenwriter, Tony Kushner; and the actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and James Spader.

Please, like these squares had something better to do than chill with Spielberg and a cast of major stars. When a party despises a president (and Hollywood) so much that they aren’t politically able to go to a movie opening with a celebrated director and celebrities, there is a need for professional intervention with a team of shrinks. I mean, seriously, I want to run for a GOP senate seat, just for the invitation.
