Leading ex-gay ministry leaders and reparative therapists often claim that they love gay people and are just trying to help them change from gay to heterosexual. They go to great lengths to say that they offer a message of “hope”, not hate. However, the truth usually lurks right beneath the surface, as these men and women occasionally let down their guard and reveal their true anti-gay biases.
The most disturbing part about the quotes of many of these leaders is that they claim to be people dedicated to science or ministry. But it is clear by their own words that they are more interested in perpetuating discrimination and persecution, than in furthering science and spirituality. While the majority of volunteers and people involved in the ministries are good, sincere people, the same can not be said about the actions of most of their leaders. The following are anti-gay quotes by key reparative therapists and ex-gay ministry leaders. Ironically, they all claim that they are not politically motivated or anti-gay and that they love gay people.

One of the founders of the largest “exgay” organization in the nation is now a gay man who speaks out against Exodus. Here he discusses how his early involvement in a Christian crisis hotline lead him to learn of the existence of supposed “ex-gays.” While working at the hotline Bussee was shocked to learn many Christian counselors held bizarre views about homosexuals being possessed by demons. This led Bussee to found a small “ex-gay” ministry called EXIT. EXIT later joined into a coalition of other ministries which would become known as Exodus.
