If you’re following presidential politics, you know that the biggest takeaway from Wednesday’s presidential debate in Denver was arguably Mitt Romney’s comment to moderator Jim Lehrer about what he’d like to do to public broadcasting, should he be elected:
“I’m sorry, Jim, I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird. Actually like you, too. But I’m not going to — I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for. That’s number one.”
It triggered a firestorm on social media sites and generated dozens of memes (I’ve posted some of the highlights below, including one of my own, of course!), but now, Rick Santorum has decided to weigh in. When CNN’s Piers Morgan asked the former presidential candidate whether he’d kill Big Bird, Santorum replied that he’d voted to do just that, and then added, “I mean, you can kill things and still like them, maybe to eat them, I don’t know.”

Ugh. Call me crazy, but hearing one of America’s most outspoken homophobes say the words “You can kill things and still like them” just rubs me the wrong way. Thank goodness that voters had the good sense to keep this man far, far away from the presidency.
