Wayne just named today’s recipient of TWO’s Creep of the Week award — and believe me, he’s quite the creep! — but I think Caleb Douglas Hesse of Yucca Valley, California deserves at least an honorable mention.
Hesse, 52, was formally charged in San Bernardino Superior Court last week on four counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child. The San Bernardino County Sun reports that Hesse, who is being held on a $2.5 million bail, may also face charges related to additional victims. He is due back in court today.
Hesse is an anti-gay activist who contributed to the successful Proposition 8 campaign, which stripped same-sex couples in California of their existing right to marry in 2008. He also owns the website ProtectMarriage.com, which, according to Gay Star News, gathers donations for Prop 8’s legal defense fund.
According to the Sun, Hesse is a former first-grade teacher who has also worked for the past 30 years as a youth volunteer with a local Evangelical Free Church, participating in “many overnight trips with the group around the state.”
Although investigators say Mr. Hesse admitted to sheriff’s deputies that he has molested boys, he pleaded not guilty in court to the charges against him. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of eight years, plus 45 years to life in a state prison.
