Just when you thought Arizona Governor Jan Brewer — famous for her relentless attacks on racial and ethnic minorities, women, and LGBT people, to name a few — couldn’t sink any lower, she pulls a stunt like this: according to the Advocate, Brewer’s lawyers have asked the Supreme Court to overturn a federal appellate court ruling that required Arizona to provide health benefits to the same-sex partners of state employees.
Gov. Brewer believes that, by effectively allowing state employees to put their same-sex partners on their health plans in the same way that employees with opposite-sex partners can, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is misconstruing the Equal Protection Clause in the U.S. Constitution.
