This is what happens when a Religious Right activist starts getting pushed further and further to the fringes. Though, as Right Wing Watch points out, major hate groups like the Family Research Council and American Family Association still quietly use the discredited research of the thoroughly disgraced Paul Cameron in order to further their crusade of hatred against LGBT people, they don’t really like to make a big deal of it.

Oh, but Cameron continues to talk, and in doing so, discrediting the entire anti-gay movement. In an interview on Crosstalk, Cameron claimed that the “long term goal of the homosexual movement is to get every little boy to grab his ankles and every little girl to give it a try.” No, really, he said that.

I’ll post the transcript and the video below, where he also claims that Obama might be gay, but this is what we mean when we say that the absolute last thing we want to do to these people is silence them in any way. Though whiny, weak mean like Matt Barber and Porno Pete like to scream and cry about how they’re being “silenced,” the truth is that one of the best things we gay rights activists can do for our own cause is simply to report the words of our opponents verbatim, because normal people see their words and beliefs as prurient, sick, hateful and downright insane. [Because they are.] So please, Paul Cameron, understand that we at Truth Wins Out won’t “silence you.”

Here’s the video and transcript, again, via Right Wing Watch:

Well, the timing is I think miserable for his reelection. I would have expected him, as you did, to wait until he was the new president and say, “Guess what? I’ve changed my mind,” or, “I’ve evolved.” But homosexuality is the one sin, or the one habit, that is 24/7. It is homosexuality all the time. And actually, while I’m not sure about the claims by the various people who have reported that Obama has at least participated at times with them in homosexual acts, this certainly lends some credence.

Mark my words clearly; the long term goal of the homosexual movement is to get every little boy to grab his ankles and every little girl to give it a try. They will not rest until every one of our children at least gets to try, has the opportunity and maybe is forced to at least once experience homosexual acts. There is no retreating from that, they made it very clear earlier on—now they don’t take about it—but that’s what they want, they will not be happy until they get it, marriage is just a step along the way.

Absolutely insane. RWW also has audio of Cameron asserting that homosexuality should be criminalized, and that the Church shouldn’t even waste time on trying to de-gay people. Just throw us in jail, he says.

This seems like a good time for a quick sidenote. Does everybody remember the video that went viral the other day, of a woman delivering a deranged anti-gay rant in Nebraska? Most people saw it and said, “Wow, she’s crazy!,” and it turns out that she is, indeed, schizophrenic. This is important, but perhaps not for why you think it’s important. First, background on the woman, Jane Svoboda:

Jane Svoboda, 52, lives at an assisted-living facility in Lincoln and is listed as a protected person, according to court documents. Her brother, Patrick Svoboda of Ogallala, is her conservator because she is incompetent, the documents say. He was unaware of the video’s popularity, but wasn’t surprised — he knew it would be a matter of time before she got in trouble somewhere. He said he’s disappointed the video garnered such attention and jokes without the whole story. “To me, it shows how little society really cares about people with mental health issues,” Patrick Svoboda said. “She does have a very tender heart … but anything she says is certifiably schizophrenic … she’s not some crazy conservative.” He said her family has tried to get her help multiple times, but unless she harms herself or others, there’s not much more they can do.

Here is the thing. With all due respect and understanding to the situation her brother Patrick finds himself in, that rant didn’t go viral because people are insensitive to mental health issues [okay, yes, Americans are, but that’s NOT why the video went viral]. It went viral because, in its content, it is no different than an anti-gay rant from Scott Lively in Uganda; from a vicious hate screed by Linda Harvey or Laurie Higgins; from an overcompensating anti-gay treatise by Matt Barber on how manly Matt Barber is; from a leathersex photo gallery and commentary posted by Peter LaBarbera; and of course, from a radio interview with disgraced, sad quack Paul Cameron. The remarkable thing about the video of Jane Svoboda in Nebraska was that her rant was, qualitatively, the exact same thing as the weird, prurient, deranged crap we deal with from America’s most notorious homophobes on a daily basis.

Jane Svoboda has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. Perhaps if we are to be sensitive to mental health issues, as Jane’s brother urges, we should encourage the family and friends of the people I listed above to seek help.
