Such are the yokels who get elected to public office in places like Mississippi:

Days after he signed a law that would effectively shut down his state’s only remaining abortion-performing clinic, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant accused Democrats of having one mission in life: “to abort children.”

“The hypocrisy of the left that now tried to kill this bill, that says that I should have never signed it, the true hypocrisy is that their one mission in life is to abort children, is to kill children in the womb,” Bryant told conservative radio host Tony Perkins on Tuesday.

Bryant touted the bill, which increases the requirements for doctors to legally perform abortions, as the “the first step” in ending abortions in Mississippi, a goal the governor campaigned on.

This is why there is no such thing as “civil discourse” in this country, and for liberals, it shouldn’t even be viewed as a reasonable goal. Wingnuts do not operate or argue in the realm of reality, and you cannot have “civil discourse” with people like that. Aside from the obvious corollaries between the fights for women’s reproductive health and LGBT equality [they’re the same fight], people should note how similar the fantasy worlds they construct in both fights really are. Instead of arguing the merits of civil marriage equality, they cry wolf on behalf of their gods about gays “recruiting children” and “silencing [fundamentalist] Christians.” Instead of having an honest debate on the best way to ensure that women get the best healthcare possible and are able to raise wanted, planned children in the best environments possible [an argument that we easily win], they create a ludicrous fantasy world wherein the majority of Americans who support Roe v. Wade are somehow murderous monsters who want nothing more than to kill every baby on the planet. It enhances their victim mentalities to think like this, and it preys on the stupid. It also keeps their flocks in line, because over there on the Far Right, things are very authoritarian, and their people are trained not to question the words and deeds of their Respected Male Leaders.

In short: one side is fighting for the rights and health of all women, and the other side says that the Good Guys wake up all day trying to come up with new ways to kill kids. Civil discourse? Please.
