Bonobos, toads, and rams are among the many species of animals known to form same-sex pairs or have same-sex intercourse. Now it seems that squid, too, are in on the action, with males as ready to shoot their sperm packets at other males as to females. OK, admittedly, the scientist who studied their mating behavior, Hendrik J.T. Hoving, says these are not gay squid per se. “[Hoving] fended off that notion, reiterating that the squid has no discernible sexual orientation.” But it’s always worth pondering why a species’ homosexual behavior might be advantageous. Read on.
