In 2005, I unwisely paraphrased a Northwestern University study that basically said that male bisexuals did not exist. I wrote, “Study: Bisexuality is Bullshit.”
This is essentially what the study said and did not reflect my personal opinion on the topic. Unfortunately, hordes of angry bisexuals attacked me online, pigheadedly refusing to listen to my explanation and ascribing beliefs to me that I did not hold. I’m still offended by this obnoxious and ignorant onslaught and disgraceful attempt to demagogue my views. I’ve always believed that bisexuality exists in both men and woman.
I am pleased to announce today that a new study is out that says that bisexuality is not bullshit. Once again, I am paraphrasing a study — but this one actually reflects my views. According to the New York Times:
In an unusual scientific about-face, researchers at Northwestern University have found evidence that at least some men who identify themselves as bisexual are, in fact, sexually aroused by both women and men….In both studies, men watched videos of male and female same-sex intimacy while genital sensors monitored their erectile responses. While the first study reported that the bisexuals generally resembled homosexuals in their responses, the new one finds that bisexual men responded to both the male and female videos, while gay and straight men in the study did not.
Well, this is great news and congratulations to the bisexual community and all who love science. Attention scientists, can we please have more studies that test “ex-gay” reaction to gay porn? I really a want to write the headline, Study: Ex-Gay is bullshit. Wait, I already do that.
