The midterm elections have not even taken place, yet GOP presidential wannabes are streaming into Iowa. Surely, the political onslaught will get more insufferable for Iowa residents next week with the State Fair. There will be no shortage of corn-dog eating, plaid shirt wearing, ethanol worshiping Republican candidates riding the political merry-go-round.

Today, the New York Times wrote about the efforts of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty to present himself as an alternative to Mitt Romney. For those who don’t remember, Pawlenty is the phony who is disingenuously posing as an ultra-conservative to woo the Tea Bagger crowd. At the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this year he derided liberals for supposedly hanging out at “Chablis-drinking, Brie-eating parties in San Francisco.”(Okay, I admit, I’ve been to one. But only one.)

Sadly, Pawlenty is just one of a sorry crop of Republican candidates. This batch of anti-gay bigots would do much damage to the LGBT movement, and the country in general. Here is a list of Republican presidential hopefuls with the number of times they have already been to Iowa:

Former Penn. Sen. Rick Santorum (5)

Gov. Tim Pawlenty (5)

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (3)

Texas Rep. Ron Paul (3)

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (3)

Indiana Rep. Mike Pence (2)

Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney (1)

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (1)

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (1)

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (1)

Former NY Gov. George Pataki (1)

Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann (1)

There you have it — the inmates are clearly running the GOP asylum. Is this not the scariest line-up of presidential candidates you’ve ever seen?
