According to “ex-gay” survivor Vincent Cervantes: Reparative therapy groups often confuse gender identity and sexual orientation, thus changing the unique personalities of great people in attempt to change their sexual orientation. I was taught that my “non-masculine” behaviors (such as theatre, choir, etc) were causing me to be gay, when in fact, gender expression has nothing to do with a person’s sexual orientation. I was forced to give up those things and the wounds still exist and still hurt time to time.
